Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is popular for her social involvement, acting skills and her ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the nickname "delicate and sensitive" when she was just eight years old. Latifah started singing with the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public in which she sang a version of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mom was a major influencer as she was always in contact with the children and music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, invited her to join an event at the school.
